Hair shedding during weight loss | Onyx Nutra

Hair Shedding During Weight Loss: What's Normal?

Quick answer: Extra hair shedding a few months after rapid weight loss is common and usually temporary. It's often linked to a condition called telogen effluvium, where a physical stress pushes more hairs into the shedding phase at once. Eating enough protein, iron and zinc supports normal hair, and shedding typically settles within several months. See your GP if it's patchy, severe or lasts longer than six months.

Why weight loss can trigger shedding

Each hair follicle cycles between growing, resting and shedding. A significant change, such as rapid weight loss, a big drop in calories, illness or stress, can shift more follicles into the resting phase at the same time. Around two to three months later, those hairs shed together, which is why it can feel sudden.

This can happen with any fast weight loss, whether through diet, surgery or GLP-1 medicines like Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Is it normal?

Losing some hair every day is completely normal. Telogen effluvium usually shows as general thinning across the scalp rather than bald patches, and the hair normally grows back once the trigger settles.

Nutrients that matter for hair

  • Protein: hair is made mainly of the protein keratin, so a low protein intake is worth addressing first. See our guide to getting enough protein on a GLP-1.
  • Zinc: contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails.
  • Selenium: contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails.
  • Biotin: contributes to the maintenance of normal hair.
  • Iron: low iron is a common and treatable cause of hair shedding, especially in women. Your GP can check your levels with a blood test.

Our Biotin + Zinc & Selenium Complex combines these three in one daily tablet.

An honest note on biotin: it's widely marketed for hair growth, but extra biotin is unlikely to make a difference if you're not low in it. Getting your overall diet right matters most. Also, high-dose biotin can interfere with some blood test results, so tell your doctor you're taking it before any blood test.

Practical tips while it settles

  • Be gentle: avoid tight hairstyles and very hot styling tools.
  • Don't crash diet: steady, sustainable weight loss is kinder to your hair.
  • Keep protein up at every meal.
  • Give it time: regrowth takes months, as hair grows around 1cm a month.

When to see your GP

  • Bald patches or a receding hairline
  • Shedding lasting more than six months
  • Other symptoms such as extreme tiredness, feeling cold or weight changes you can't explain

FAQs

Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?

Hair shedding has been reported by some people on GLP-1 medicines, and is thought to be linked mainly to rapid weight loss rather than the medicine itself. Speak to your prescriber if you're concerned.

Will my hair grow back after weight loss?

In most cases of telogen effluvium, yes. Shedding usually settles within several months.

Does biotin stop hair loss?

Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, but it isn't a treatment for hair loss.
